  • 1st long format Sci-Fi movie 
  • Focus is between rich v. poor, young v. old, employee v. employer, good v. evil, dirty v. clean etc.
  • Maria is the "saving grace"; associated with "purity" and "the light" (cross imagery)
  • "Hel" is associated with evil as the upside-down pentagram is shown; her name is also one letter off of "hell"
  • Freder's stalker is dressed in extremely linear clothing (long straight jacket with sharp lines, simple geometric hat, dark eye makeup)
  • quality of air pollution also distinguished between the have and have nots 
  • clothing differences distinguish the rich v. the poor, young v. old, and have v. have nots (rich look like Wall Street type, Freder is dressed in boy's play clothes, and the workers are dressed like factory workers of the time period)

  • "will 10 hours never end" = reference to work day (christ on the cross imagery)
  • workers take off their hat and kneel in Maria's presence (more religious imagery)

  • "Heart" is the mediator between the"head" and "hands" = Maria

  • Freder is dressed in light clothes and everyone else is dressed in dark clothes (he stands out)

  • Maria's consciousness and appearance is transferred to "Hel"; Maria is "transformed" through heavy eye makeup
